Cancer Q&A

by Mary Anne Pajel-Sio, MD

What is cancer?

While cancer is a broad term that describes over 100 different conditions, every type of cancer involves an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, also called a malignancy. Cancer can strike any part of your body and varies widely in aggressiveness and treatability.

Am I at risk for cancer?

The short answer to this is that everyone is susceptible to cancer, but there are a few risk factors that influence whether you develop the disease, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Environment (sun exposure)
  • Lifestyle or habits (such as tobacco use)
  • Sexual activity

As a primary care physician, Dr. Pajel-Sio is trained to look out for risk factors. She works with you both proactively and through early intervention to minimize the impact cancer has on your life.

What cancers can be screened for?

While the cure for cancer remains elusive, the medical community has made great strides in finding ways to screen for cancer or to detect it early. That's especially true if you fall into one of two risk categories: family history and lifestyle.

Family history

If you have a family history of certain types of cancer, Dr. Pajel-Sio relies on an approach that emphasizes an aggressive health maintenance program, especially for the following:

  • Breast cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Cervix cancer

Through screenings and examinations, such as colonoscopies, mammograms, regular visits, and lab work, Dr. Pajel-Sio works diligently with you to track your health and detect any signs of the disease well in advance. Doing so gives you the best chance to treat cancer, or even stop it from developing in the first place.

Outside risk factors

Many cancers develop as a result of lifestyle or habits, such as spending too much time in the sun, sexual activity, or smoking. In these cases, Dr. Pajel-Sio works with her patients in the following areas:

  • Smoking cessation, as well as monitoring through MRIs for lesions
  • Sunscreen use or avoiding tanning beds
  • Cervical screening to check for abnormal cells caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, a sexually-transmitted disease

Ultimately, Dr. Pajel-Sio strives to stay ahead of cancer, giving you the best possible odds to fight the disease. To take charge of your health, call or book an appointment online.
